Healthy Mind-Wandering

Wandering and returning so to wander and then return.  This is the mind comfortable with itself.

The icon reminds us that like life, mind-wandering is a process.

I am traveling through life and something happens and I wander.  Unaware that I have wandered, I can wander further and further away from center and balance. Wandering, itself, is both natural and necessary.  If I were to stop my mind from wandering, I might lose the gifts of insight, intuition and creativity.  So, the problem is not the wandering, it is being so caught up in it that you are unaware that you have wandered far from center and balance.

Transforming Anxiety

Happiness is sustained by a wave of expansion.  If in the midst of this expansion you pull back or tighten your ribs, it is natural to feel anxious.   


The icon evokes your visceral understanding of this archetypally human state of heart-and-mind.

The wave of expansion that empowers the feeling of happiness naturally and inexorably turns into a wave of contraction, before once again expanding outward.  When the contraction is done on purpose this subtle movement can activate healthy vigilance and fast thinking.  When the contraction is, instead, generated by reactivity it is natural to experience feeling anxious or uncertain.  The practice you will learn can also useful if you feel uncertain, agitated, caught in either/or thinking, panic, tightness, being hyper-vigilant.

Uplifting Heaviness

To the degree that we can accept the downward pull, the power of life can uplift us.

The icon reminds us that just like inhaling and exhaling, or yin and yang, down becomes up.

Sometimes it feels like there is no end to down.  It is as though there is no limit to how heavy you can feel.  Down seems to go down forever.   Trying to resist the gravitational force of this experience, I can fight against it by lifting myself up.  Maintaining this effort is not only draining but it also interferes with the free flow of my life.   Unable to find the strength to resist or just unable to fight anymore, I can give in to the feeling of the endless down that sucks my mood through the very floor.   Or, I can struggle to go on with my life even though my mood and my attention is continually being pulled downward.   But none of these methods really help.  What if there is another way to handle this endless down feeling that I can’t see from where I am looking? What if it is actually possible to transform this unpleasant mood and my life?

Restoring Peace of Mind-and-Heart

Refusing to discharge the pent up tensions, we can use them in the service of strengthening our capacity to be peaceful.

The icon shows the four ways that the pressures can escape generating the illusion that we have handled the matter.

When pressures and tensions build up past a certain point we find ourselves off-center and out of touch with our capacity for experiencing peace of mind-and-heart.  Since the emotions of both peaceful and angry belong to the Wind Family let's explore how we can recognize and transform the pressures before they can trigger the emotion and actions we call “anger.”  What has made dealing with "anger" - in all of its forms - so difficult is that we have been trained not to look at the whole picture.  By working with "anger" as a family of emotions, it is much easier to transform these pressures and tensions so that you can be more productive and peaceful.
